Switchbacks End Inaugural Season As One Of Top USL Teams‏

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC finish their inaugural season in the USL as one of the top teams. “It’s hard to believe this first season is over,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “From where we have come when we started in February, it has been a pleasure coaching these players. We battled until the end tonight and I couldn’t have asked for more. These guys have great character and are great players.” The Switchbacks ended their playoff run Sunday night in Oklahoma City in a penalty kick shootout. This was the second time in three weeks the Switchbacks have been to OKC to play the Energy FC, and it was a grudge match from the start after the last match ended in a tie. The Switchbacks came out fighting from the start, and in just the sixth minute Switchbacks Team Captain Luke Vercollone (#4) hit a shot into the left side of the net from almost an impossible angle off a header from Chandler Hoffman (#15). The Energy FC picked up speed as the first half went on, and in the 45th minute Chuy Sanchez (#10) headed in an equalizer from 10 yards out. The match ended regular time at 1-1. In overtime, the Energy FC’s Peabo Doue (#3) got past the Switchbacks defense and found the back of the net in the seventh OT minute. The Switchbacks weren’t finished. Substitute Aaron King (#18) tied it back up in the final minute of OT. With the match ending in a tie, it all came down to penalty kicks to decide who would advance to the Western Conference Final. The Switchbacks’ Vercollone, Nate Robinson and Chandler Hoffman all scored their PKs, but it wasn’t enough to match the Energy FC’s four PKs. “Our heads are held high,” said Switchbacks Team Captain Luke Vercollone. “I’m really proud of what these guys have done all season. This team showed a lot of heart. It was a tough result tonight, and anything can happen in PKs. I’m proud of what we’ve done.” “I’m a little speechless,” said Switchbacks FC Goalkeeper Devala Gorrick. “I thought we were going to win it, but that’s how football goes sometimes. Our team played with so much heart and passion and I’m proud to be a part of something so special. We put Switchbacks on the map as a top tier team.” The Switchbacks want to thank all of the fans who have come out to support them this inaugural season! “No one can deny the heart and dedication that this group showed this season,” said Switchbacks’ Aaron King. “It was an absolute honor writing history this season. Hats off to the front office staff, coaching staff, and fans for making it such an awesome year. This is only the beginning. Great things are to come.”
