On June 10, 2015, the Colorado Springs Police Department received numerous telephone calls from concerned citizens who stated that they had been contacted by someone who was claiming to be “the lead investigator” from the Falcon Division of the Colorado Springs Police Department. The citizens said that the person, usually a male but sometimes a female, stated that the citizen’s family member was in trouble and that the citizen needed to send the suspect money. The reason the family member was in trouble varied from unpaid traffic tickets, to warrants, to tax evasion. The suspects appeared to be calling from the Falcon Substation telephone number of 719-444-7240 and would tell people to conduct a web search of the phone number so they could confirm that the suspect was from the police department. The suspect would not provide their name and information to the citizen and had a significant accent. While the phone number of 719-444-7240 is a telephone number for the police department, these telephone calls are not originating from any member of the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The Colorado Springs Police Department would like to remind citizens that an employee of the police department will NEVER call a citizen and demand money. Employees of the police department will readily identify themselves when in contact with citizens, whether that is in person or on the telephone. If you are contacted on the telephone by someone claiming to be from the police department and are suspicious, please contact the Colorado Springs Police Department to confirm that the person who is calling works for the police department.
