Switchbacks Play Hard-fought Battle for Home Opener‏

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC played their first-ever home USL game at Sand Creek Stadium on Saturday, April 4th at 1 p.m.

In front of a crowd of 3,000, the Switchbacks FC battled Western Conference rivals OKC Energy FC.

It was a slow start for both teams.  But in the 34th minute, Energy FC’s Danni Konig (#9) found the back of the net bringing the score to 1-0.  The Switchbacks held their own through the rest of the half, fighting off several well-played attacks.

Then, the second half started and the Switchbacks FC were on fire.

Tensions were high on the field, forcing several yellow cards to be issued.  In the 56th minute, Switchbacks FC’s Jordan Burt (#25) was issued two yellow cards, which became a red card and he was ejected from the game.  Switchbacks FC’s Samir Badr (#23) was also issued a yellow card, as was OKC Energy FC’s Gareth Evans (#5).  All of the cautions were from unsportsman-like behavior.

After several attacks and unlucky missed goals, a beautifully placed ball by Miguel Gonzalez (#10) to Mike Seth (#12) put the Switchbacks FC on the board in the 67th minute as the ball found the back of the net.  Switchbacks 1, OKC Energy FC 1.

It came down to the wire, and three minutes of stoppage time, but in the 93rd minute, OKC Energy FC’s Danni Konig (#9) scored putting the Energy FC on top.

The final score was Switchbacks FC 1, OKC Energy FC 2.

The Switchbacks FC will be on the road next Saturday, April 11th against Real Monarchs SLC.
