I-70 COLORADO – The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a traffic crash on Interstate 70, mile marker 289 involving two buses and two semi tractor trailers. The crash occurred at approximately 8:20 AM in the westbound lanes when the front of a 1998 Prevost bus collided with the rear of a 2014 Freightliner semi and trailer that was stopped in traffic. The 1998 bus then struck a second 2014 Freightliner (FedEx) semi and trailer and a second bus, a 2013 Prevost with 10 occupants, before coming to rest blocking lanes of traffic.
The driver of the first bus, John Crawford, 41, was transported to University hospital with serious injuries. Eight passengers from the bus were also transported to University with minor to moderate injuries; three passengers were transported to Aurora South hospital with minor to moderate injuries. No parties from the second bus or either semi were transported.
Fog and weather are being considered as contributing factors in the crash.
Crew members for recording artist Twin Shadow were on board the first bus. Crew members for the band Thompson Square were on board the second bus. The buses were not traveling together.
I-70 remains closed to westbound traffic but will open shortly once the debris field is cleared from the roadway and the bus removed from the lanes of traffic. No charges have been filed but the case remains open.
