After the first week of 2015 FIFA matches, the teams in the top-level Mexican soccer league are back at it, more determined to win than ever before. With the Liguilla playoffs just a few weeks away, the eight teams to advance have not yet been decided.
At the top of the tournament standings are Club Tijuana and Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, the two teams with the most powerful offenses, boasting a total of 22 and 19 goals in the tournament, respectively.
Gabriel Hauche, Juan Arango, and Dayro Moreno have helped take Tijuana to first place, while Julio Furch, forward for the Tiburones Rojos, is the top-scorer in the league this tournament, with 7 goals scored in 11 matches.
Though Club Tijuana and Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz remain a long way from achieving the legendary status of the “five greats” of Mexican soccer – Club América, Club León, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul, and Deportivo Toluca F.C. – which, in the past five tournaments have stood out in terms of goals scored and victories earned, the Tijuana and Veracruz squadrons both have the potential to be crowned champions of the 2015 Torneo Clausura.
Other teams that have surpassed expectations in this 2015 Torneo Clausura include C.D. Guadalajara, Puebla F.C., and Club Universidad de Guadalajara. While the Chivas of C.D. Guadalajara have a strong grip on third place in the standings, Puebla F.C. is on the path to qualifying for theLiguilla playoffs. In their last few matches, the Leones Negros of Club Universidad Guadalajara have demonstrated they are worthy adversaries as they have faced off against some of the greats, doing everything possible to avoid a drop in the standings.
This “soccer Friday” at 9:30 pm E/ 8:30 pm C/ 6:30 pm P, Monarcas Morelia welcomes Club Santos Laguna at Estadio Morelos. Despite their past accomplishments, both teams have had difficulties this tournament and a victory this week is crucial for each team.
Saturday at 7:00 pm E/ 6:00 pm C/ 4:00 pm P, Puebla F.C. will face off against Deportivo Toluca F.C. as each team looks to consolidate its position in the standings and qualify for the playoffs. Later, at 11:00 pm E/ 10:00 pm C/ 8:00 pm P, Club Tijuana, the current tournament leader, welcomes C.F. Monterrey at Estadio Caliente.
