Dressed in a white suit, with a cigar in hand, and his signature Missouri twang, Hal Holbrook brings his epic one-man act, Mark Twain Tonight! to the stage. With a career marked by five Emmy® awards, a TV adaptation of his monologue, and over 2,200 performances, Holbrook’s stunning embodiment of Mark Twain is a must-see event. Mark Twain Tonight! comes to Popejoy Hall Friday, March 27, 2015 at 8pm.
In his performance, Holbrook selects passages from Twain’s work based on what is relevant to audiences today. The issues that Twain discusses in his writings – bigotry, censorship, media, politics, racism, and religion – are universal to mankind, and make for a topical performance year after year. Holbrook presents the work with unprecedented energy and humor, and captures Twain’s essence in a way that no other actor has managed with comparable prowess and authenticity.
Holbrook developed his Twain characterization as an honors project he began while at Dennison University in Ohio. Holbrook first performed his character sketch in 1954, and continues to perform it each year without exception. Though he is now entering his sixtieth year performing Mark Twain Tonight! Holbrook doesn’t tire of the role. “Mark Twain never stops surprising me,” Holbrook said in an interview. “He’s kept me fired up and asking questions most of my 89 years.”
