Good News Bulletin – April Happenings

Several events are going on in Elizabeth Schools and our Community.  Here is a glimpse of what’s happening.

Join the EHS Jazz band and Jazz choir for a night of delicious food and dancing April 10 at the Jazz Dinner Dance! Enjoy the jazz choir while you eat and then dance the night away with the jazz band! Tickets are on sale through April 3. Dinner and dessert: $12 or dessert only $5. Contact Megan O’Connor or Zack Coles at EHS to purchase tickets.  The Jazz Dinner Dance starts at 6:00pm at EHS.

Arbor Day Art Contest Celebrating 125 Years of Elizabeth!  Last day for artwork submission is April 1. Contest winners will have their art displayed at the Town Hall from May to September of 2015 to celebrate the Town’s 125 year anniversary.  The award ceremony begins at noon, April 25 at Elizabeth Community Garden.  Artwork should be submitted to the Town Hall on Banner Street.   For more information contact Rachel Hodgson at 303-646-4166.

All students interested in joining the EHS Marching Band and Color Guard in 2015 should attend the mandatory info meeting on April 6 at 5:30pm in the EHS Band Room.  The meeting will cover season schedule, cost, and will reveal next year’s show concept.

Shelby Brown’s 8th grade classes will be celebrating the publishing of their “In Search of Wisdom” books they authored.  The students interviewed a grandparent, or older adult, and collected a memorable event that they turned into a historical fiction book.  There will be a celebration with cookies and lemonade on Wednesday, April 8th at 6:30pm in the EMS cafeteria.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Come one, come all to the 2nd annual SHE Family Fun Dance Night. The dance is on Friday, April 10 from 6:00 to 7:30pm in the SHE gym. Dances will include folk line and circle dances, square dances, and swing, as well as contemporary line dances like the Macarena and the Cupid Shuffle. All ages are welcome, bring the whole family. The event is free to the public. Come also in support of SHE Ambassadors who will be selling concessions to raise money to fund their organization.

The Air Academy Art Show will be on display from April 6-17. This show allows art students from K-12 grade to show their talents and for a chance to win scholarship money. The student’s artwork will be on display at EHS in the front lobby area.

The Elizabeth Education Foundation will be hosting the 17th Annual S.T.A.R.S Banquet on Saturday, April 11 at the Elizabeth High School.  S.T.A.R.S (Students Taking Accountability and Responsibility Seriously) is a program that recognizes students from throughout the school district who have a positive impact not only in their respective schools, but also within the community.  Each year approximately 50 students are nominated by faculty members to receive this award.

Thanks to a $12,000 grant, Jody Urbas and the EMS musical theatre class earned the Page to Stage grant from Opera Colorado.  Through this grant, the students will be working with professionals in the industry to write and perform their own musical.  The students will be performing their own musicals for the community, free of charge, in the EMS theatre on April 28 at 7:00pm.

Get health screenings at the 9Health Fair hosted by Channel 9 News.  The 9Health Fair will be April 18 from 7:00am – noon at Elizabeth Middle School.  The Elizabeth High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) were asked to assist in the publicity for the event.  Read the Press Release.  

Pizza Day for Kids is Tuesday, April 7 at Buzzard’s Pizza.  10% of all proceeds will go the Elizabeth School District’s Citizen Impact Committee.  This committee was formed in conjunction with the school district and citizen volunteers to promote and assist district initiatives including the EHS Track and Field Initiative.  Eat in or Dine out at Buzzard’s Pizza.

The Pines & Plains Libraries Foundation is hosting their 2nd Annual Electronics Recycling Event at the Elizabeth Library, 651 W. Beverly St., on Saturday, April 11, 2015, from 10:00am to 2:00pm.  Blue Star Recyclers will be on hand to receive TVs, audio/visual equipment, computer monitors and towers, laptops, printers, fax machines, scanners, stereo equipment, and batteries.

The Elbert County Office of Emergency Management is hosting 2 trainings.  Weather Spotter Training will be on April 21 from 6:30pm-9:00pm at the Old County Courthouse in Kiowa.  The training will be conducted by members of the National Weather Service.  Learn the skill of detecting severe weather as it moves into the neighborhood.  The Emergency Preparedness Clinic will be held on April 11 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Elbert County Fairgrounds in Kiowa. A dedicated staff and volunteers will be presenting many aspects of planning and preparedness for emergency evacuations, preparing your property for wildfire and many other emergency scenarios.

4-H Spring Fling Gala is scheduled for Saturday, April 18 from 5:00pm-11:00pm at the Elbert County Fairgrounds.  Reception, Auction, Dinner, and Dancing; the event supports kids in the Elbert County 4-H program.

Looking ahead:

Golf Tournament, May 29 at 8:00am at Spring Valley Golf Club.  $100.00 per player includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch, and prizes.  Drop off your registration form and money at the Elizabeth High School attention Lori McCoin.  Golf Tournament supports the EHS Track Initiative.

3rd Annual Zumbathon Charity Event will be held on Saturday, May 2 from 10:00am – 11:30am at Elizabeth Fire Station.

Kiowa Street Fair and Car Show will be held June 27 from 9:00am – 3:00pm.  100% of the proceeds from the Car Show will go to benefit the Elizabeth Veteran’s Memorial. Would you like to be a vendor at the Street Fair contact 303-621-2366.

ElizaBash Street Festival is June 6, 2015.  This event is located in the heart of Elizabeth on Main Street and draws more than 5,000 festival goers each year.  The day begins with the Stampede Rodeo Parade then the street is cleared for the festival including arts and crafts, food, live music and other fun activities.  Stop by the Elizabeth Schools Board of Education booth.
