In 1983, President Reagan declared April as the first National Child Abuse Prevention Month. During the month of April and throughout the year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human services encourages communities to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities and promote prevention across the country. This is the same goal of Families First, here in Colorado.
Families First wears multiple hats in benefitting the community. The first and most well known aspect of the organization is the Children’s Treatment Center. The Center offers a warm, homelike environment for children, ages 3-12 who have been abused or neglected. During their stay at the Children’s Treatment Center, children are provided with a safe environment in which to develop trusting relationships with adults and learn what it is like to live in a healthy family setting.
The other hat Families First wears is supporting families through its prevention and intervention services. Families First provides education classes, support groups and a family support line to help parents put their children’s needs first. There are also multiple services for Spanish-speaking families.
Friends for Families First is hosting it’s annual Steppin’ Out Gala supporting the work Families First is doing here in Colorado. This year’s event, “Mambo in Miami,” will be held on April 18, 2015 at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Denver Tech Center. The event will begin at 5:30pm.
The guild is anticipating 300 patrons to experience an energetic fun-filled evening including a silent auction, passed tapas, Latin inspired cocktails, fine dining, a live auction, and musical entertainment by Denver’s premiere 10-piece band, “Rockslide”. Event chairs are currently accepting donations for the silent auction. Examples of items include vacation accommodations, gourmet dining experiences, sports memorabilia, unique outings and creative gifts. The goal is to raise $120,000 for Families First.
Tickets for the event are $200 for patrons, $160 for non-members, $145 for members of Friends of Families First and $100 for Young Professionals Tickets (ages 21-35 years).
There are currently two additional fundraising events scheduled for 2015. Our FORE Golf Tournament will be held at The Country Club at Castle Pines on June 15th and on July 26th, we will have our familyfriendly event, The Country Fair, at Hudson Gardens.
