Matt McBride crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (49-74) to a walk-off, 8-7 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers (64-58) on Monday night at Security Service Field. It was the tenth walk-off win of the season for Colorado Springs and the second delivered by McBride.
Omaha took an early lead in the second inning as they plated three runs off of Sky Sox starter James Houser. The first run came on a double steal with Carlos Peguero stealing home. The last two came courtesy of RBI singles by Brian Bocock and Paul Janish.
The Sky Sox battled back to take a 4-3 lead after scoring a pair of runs in third and fifth innings. In the third, Kyle Parker drove in a run with a groundout and McBride pushed across the other with a sac fly. Parker struck again in the fifth with a two-run homer, his 12th of the season.
The 4-3 lead would last all the way to the eighth inning until Omaha tied it up on a RBI single by Justin Maxwell. It was a short-lived tie as the Sox scored two runs in bottom half of the inning on RBI singles by Tim Smalling and Tim Wheeler.
In what would become a dramatic back-and-forth final two innings, Omaha would rally to take the lead in the top of the ninth. The Storm Chasers loaded the bases with two outs and Cheslor Cuthbert came through with a bases-clearing double to give Omaha a 7-6 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth against Malcom Culver (0-1), Cristhian Adames led-off the inning with a single to right to bring the winning run to the plate. Parker struck out on three pitches before McBride stepped to the plate and smacked his walk-off bomb.
The Sky Sox head to Sacramento tomorrow to start an eight-game road trip. Game one of their four-game series against the River Cats will feature RH Jair Jurrjens (0-2, 3.75) for the Springs versus RH Zach Neal (5-6, 4.81) for Sacramento. Game time is set for 8:05 PM (MDT).
