On a night where both 1B Justin Morneau and LHP Boone Logan made rehab appearances, the Sky Sox (45-64) couldn’t pick up the win in the series finale against the Round Rock Express (56-52), as they fell 11-4 on Monday night.
The Express tagged Mike McClendon (2-3) for 11 runs (nine earned) on seven hits and four walks in 2.2 innings of work against the righty.
The Sky Sox bullpen proceeded to shutout the Express over the final six frames, but the damage was done as the Sox couldn’t come back from the deficit.
Morneau, who made his Sky Sox debut, went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in his first rehab start and made some sharp plays in the field as well. Logan tossed a scoreless frame with one strikeout.
Round Rock was aided by a huge eight-run third inning, which included a bases clearing triple by DH Brett Nicholas, an RBI double by RF Bryan Petersen followed by a two-run single from Josh Wilson, and RBI hits from CF Jared Hoying (double) and LF Michael Choice (single).
The Sky Sox scored a pair in the fourth thanks to a two RBI single from LF Tim Smalling, and scored another in the seventh. In the eighth, catcher Dustin Garneau gave the Sox their final run thanks to a solo blast to left field to give him four home runs on the month, which is a Sky Sox high.
Michael Kirkman (4-5)picked up the win for the Express, working 2.1 scoreless frames, allowing just one hits and one walk, with two strikeouts.
RHP Lisalverto Bonilla got the starting nod for Round Rock and tossed 3.2 innings, giving up two runs (0 earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.
