Spain’s Javier Gomez Grabs Gold at ITU World Triathlon Cape Town‏

Spain’s Javier Gomez won his second straight ITU World Triathlon Series race of the season on Sunday, with a solid lead over Jonathan Brownlee, his rival from Great Britain.

Gomez broke away in the final four kilometers of the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run to finish in 1 hour, 44 minutes, 52 seconds. Brownlee took second with a time of 1:45:11, and Russia’s Dmitry Polyanskiy was third in 1:45:35. It was the third consecutive time Gomez has bested Brownlee in a World Triathlon Series race, and Gomez has now won six of the pair’s 19 encounters on the course, with Brownlee having won five.

American Lukas Verzbicas (Chula Vista, Calif.) made his return to the ITU World Triathlon Series following a serious bike crash on a training ride in July 2012, finishing 46th in 1:51:00.
