A Music Company Inc. is bringing “Trance Blues” artist Otis Taylor to the Crystola Roadhouse, 20918 E. US Highway 24, Woodland Park, on Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14, 2014. Doors open at 6:30p.m. and show time is 8:00p.m.
With Otis Taylor, it’s best to expect the unexpected. While his music, an amalgamation of roots styles in their rawest form, discusses heavyweight issues like murder, homelessness, tyranny, and injustice, his personal style is lighthearted. “I’m good at dark, but I’m not a particularly unhappy person,” he says. Part of Taylor’s appeal is his contrasting character traits. But it is precisely this element of surprise that makes him one of the most compelling artists to emerge in recent years. In fact, Guitar Player magazine writes, “Otis Taylor is arguably the most relevant blues artist of our time.”
To call Taylor a cutting edge artist is an understatement. Although his music is based in the blues and folk realm, his meticulously crafted recordings crash the barriers of jazz, rock, funk, Americana and myriad other genres to create a hybrid that Taylor labels “trance blues.” And that signature style serves as a backbone for his frank tales of struggle, freedom, desire, conflict and, of course, love.
Otis Taylor’s 13th album, My World Is Gone, is a lightning bolt of musical creativity and social commentary. Its songs crackle with poetic intelligence and a unique, adventurous sound that balances the modern world as it explores the struggles of Native Americans with contributions from Native American band Indigenous’ frontman/guitar virtuoso Mato Nanji of Boulder, CO.
“This will be Otis’ first visit to the Crystola Roadhouse” explains Amy Whitesell of A Music Company Inc., promoter of the show. “When he appeared at the 2012 Blues Under the Bridge festival he had the audience mesmerized as they danced to his “Trance Blues”, which aptly describes Otis Taylor’s music.”
Advance tickets are $18 general admission and $38 VIP (includes a reserved seat and choice of prime rib or catfish dinner) Tickets are $5 higher the day of show.
Tickets may be purchased on line at www.amusiccompanyinc or in person at the Crystola Roadhouse.
