WAPA Television, Puerto Rico’s leading broadcaster, has signed an agreement with Miguel Cotto Promotions to present “Boxeo Boricua” (Puerto Rican Boxing) exclusively in the U.S. on WAPA America, the station’s sister cable network distributed on all major cable, satellite and telco providers. The series kicks off on Sunday, February 2, 2014.
Produced by world champion Miguel Cotto’s production company, “Boxeo Boricua” is a series of regional boxing events across Puerto Rico that serves as a platform for young Puerto Rican fighters to launch their boxing careers, while seeking out new world champions.
The first match will air on Sunday, February 2, in the Roger Mendoza Coliseum in Caguas, where Eduardo “Sasso” Lopez and Miguel “Mikito” Soto will face off in an 8-round bout to become the new CABOFE Junior Lightweight champion, a regional title recognized by the World Boxing Council. A native of San Juan, 24-year-old Lopez has a record of 8-0-1 with four KOs. Soto, a 25-year-old left-handed fighter from Arecibo, has a record of 12-1 with 12 KOs.
The event will feature eight additional highly-anticipated fights featuring promising prospects, among them undefeated heavyweight Carlos “Chicano” Cotto (6-0, 4 KOs), light flyweight and Central American Games gold medal winner Angel Acosta (5-0, 5 KOs), veteran contender and national champion Omar “Pastor” Soto (15-10-1, 6 KOs), undefeated junior lightweight Yomar “The Magic” Alamo (3-0, 3 KOs), and junior welterweight from Humacao, Antonio “Cacique” Ortiz (3-0, 1 KO), among others.
