Denver MLK Day‏

Colorado state GOP to participate in annual Denver MLK Day celebration – FOR THE 1ST TIME EVER

For the first time in the 29-year history of the Denver Martin Luther King Jr. Marade (march/parade) and celebration the Colorado state Republican party will have a contingency speak to the assembly, walk in the Marade and have a booth at the festival. The state party has been promoting its participation via it’s website and newsletters for the past week. The state GOP’s participation is largely the result of pressure that has been relentlessly applied to it by a fledgling group out of Colorado Springs, the American Conservatives of Color and its founder, Derrick Wilburn. “The GOP has not be showing up in ethnic-minority communities for most of my lifetime. Then they sit and wonder, ‘Why aren’t we connecting with those voters?’  People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care – the problem black communities have with the GOP is we feel as if they don’t care. The MLK celebration is an awesome opportunity to see and be seen by voters, and its an opportunity that state officials in Colorado have squandered for three decades”, said Wilburn on a recent radio interview.

The American Conservatives of Color will march side-by-side with as many as two dozen elected Republican candidates and officials. U.S. House Representatives, candidates for U.S. Senate, state legislators, city and county officials all have pledged attendance. U.S. House Representative Mike Coffman(R) –who represents a large portion of the Denver/Aurora metro area— will be among the speakers at the step off celebration; the first time Representative Coffman has done so.

The Marade celebration begins at 10:00am at the stepping off point at E. Colfax and Columbine. The American Conservatives of Color organization assembles at the corner of Colfax and Josephine at 9:00am for a “honk’n wave” rally before joining the Marade at 10:30. The Marade route is  a 5k walk down Colfax Avenue, terminating at the state capitol. All press is welcomed at the honk’n wave.
