Otero Junior College Softball is preparing for its first annual softball camp, which will now be offered August 5, 6 and 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tippy Martinez Field. The camp is open to girls from 5-18 years old.
Ben Garcia, head coach of the Rattlers, said the date change was due to a softball tournament being held in La Junta on the original dates. “We could have still held the camp those dates at an alternate location, but we wanted to make sure that participants would get to utilize the highest quality facilities and experience play at Tippy Martinez Field,” Garcia said.
Garcia and his team are excited to offer the camp to ignite interest and develop softball skills in local youth. “We have developed a camp that is fun and affordable,” said Garcia. “We plan to combine work on the fundamentals and concepts of softball each day with the best instruction and coaching possible. Our priority is to make sure each camper leaves as a better player and has a great time.”
Camp highlights will include concentration on mechanics; strategic discussions; individualized instruction in hitting, fielding and base running; work on confidence and team building; and situation work.
Cost for the camp is $50 or $75 for two players if they are related. Fees include a camp T-shirt and softball; a camp certificate; and a lot of personal attention.
“This is more than just a softball camp, as we will stress sportsmanship, partnership and work ethic principles. Our goal is to have each camper gain a better understanding, appreciation and love of the game. No one will leave disappointed,” said Garcia.
