In her first season as an elite triathlete, Katie Hursey ran to her first career World Cup title at Sunday’s 2013 Palamos ITU Triathlon World Cup.
Hursey (Hampstead, Md.) cruised to victory on the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run course in 2 hours, 1 minute, 19 seconds, nearly 50 seconds ahead of Annamaria Mazzetti from Italy. Mazzetti was second in 2:02:06, and Australian Tamsyn Moana-veale finished third with a time of 2:02:08. Hursey’s American teammate Erin Jones (Hood River, Ore.) crossed the line in 2:02:56 for sixth.
A member of USA Triathlon’s Collegiate Recruitment Program and a former runner at Syracuse University, Hursey was sixth out of the water and was able to connect with the lead bike pack along with Jones, Great Britain’s Natalie Milne and Spain’s Carolina Routier. Throughout the seven-lap bike course, the pack lengthened their lead to 1:24 heading into the second transition. After posting the fastest bike split of the day, Hursey burst ahead of the field on the three-lap run to take the win.
“I just looked at it as a swim race, a bike race and a run race,” Hursey said. “I tried my hardest in all three and it worked out today. I felt like I could stay pretty relaxed; I didn’t have to go out hard from the start, I could just get into my groove.”
In the men’s race, Greg Billington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the top U.S. finisher with 15th place. Mark Buckingham of Great Britain took first, followed by Russian Dmitry Polyanskiy and Ukraine’s Yegor Martynenko to round out the podium. A full recap of the men’s race is available at triathlon.org.
Hursey, Billington and other U.S. elites are set to compete next weekend at the sixth stop of the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series in Hamburg, Germany.
