Colorado Burlesque Festival headliners to teach classes and workshops‏

Learn to shimmy at the Colorado Burlesque Festival!

 If you’ve ever wanted to learn the art of tassle-twirling, sexy shimmying, or hip-swiveling strip tease… the Colorado Burlesque Festival offers workshops for all levels!  These fabulous classes are taught by our festival headliners Bazuka Joe, Fannie Spankings, Katrina Dohl, Ray Gun, Michelle Minx, Ophelia Flame, Foxy Tann and Jett Adore!  Photos and interviews available on request.

All workshops will take place at The Curtis Hotel in the 2nd Floor Conference Rooms (1405 Curtis St. Denver, CO 80202) in beautiful downtown Denver. Things to know:

Class Schedule: Friday, July 12th:

Bazuka Joe “Music and Musicality” – Friday, 11:00-12:15

Music and Musicality is a 90-minute class by instructor Bazuka Joe of The Stage Door Johnnies (Burlesque Hall of Fame Best Group 2011). It covers the basic concepts of determining counts, graphing musical arcs, and choosing appropriate selections for your act. It then moves into more theoretical and practical concepts like hearing beats and accents, choosing the best moments for reveals, playing with and against the tempo and construction of a song, and pacing reveals.

Fannie Spankings “Fabulous Face Time with Fannie!” – Friday, 12:30-1:45

The rhinestones are on the gown and the tassels are on the pastie! Now for the icing on your burlesque cake — your fabulous face! Whether you are playing the part of the seductress with smoky eyes and a “come hither” stare or the rosy-pink-lipped ingenue, makeup and facial expression are a performer’s secret weapon. So come discover how to entertain the room with the bat of a lash, a sultry sneer or even an innocent smile. And while you’re at it, learn some makeup tips that can help convey your character and her tantalizing intentions along the way! (Mirrors and glitter provided.)

Katrina Dohl “Fan dancing with Katrina Dohl” – Friday, 2:00-3:15

Come learn technique through choreography! We will work on an actual number that you can walk away with. This class will focus on the fundamentals of fan dance and and feather tease but we are going to throw you into the fire. Never fear! Fans are fun and beautiful and will work just as hard as you to make a truly delightful presentation. Besides, who doesn’t want to spend an afternoon luxuriating in feathers?
Wear something fun; comfortable heels are recommended but not required; fans will be provided.

Ray Gunn “Nuts ‘n Bolts” – Friday, 3:30-4:45

“Nuts ‘n Bolts” is a 90-minute class taught by Ray Gunn of the Stage Door Johnnies. This class emphasizes coordination, strength, musicality, and strip-tease. While “Nuts ‘n Bolts” is not strictly for male burlesque performers, it is taught through a male perspective. Participants will experience stretching techniques, body conditioning, and will learn a short phrase that includes strip essentials. The class maximum is 20 participants and can be taken by novices through seasoned performers.

Saturday, July 13th

Michelle Minx “Floor work and Lap Dancing” – Saturday, 11:00-12:15

No matter what your style or talent, this class will add levels and dynamics to your performance. Learn various floor maneuvers from stripping, to splits, to bends and even to standing back up and walking gracefully in heels- or out of them. Whether you are a super flexible aerialist or a fairly stiff juggler, or anything in between, this class has something for everyone. And top the whole thing off with some lap dancing fun from one of the most experienced and passionate in the field! Bring an open mind and shoes you plan to perform in. All genders welcome.

Ophelia Flame “Strutting, Strolling & Slinking” – Saturday, 12:30-1:45

Whether it’s for the stage or the bedroom floor, this fun class will deconstruct to the fine art of walking with purpose. Students will discuss the importance of balance, intention, and learn several keys to a successful strut. Fun for all levels of experience.

Foxy Tann “Assels and Tassels for All” – Saturday, 2:00-3:15

Assels and Tassels for Men and Women of All Genders – This is a class for absolutely everyone! Foxy Tann and HardCore Pasties bring to you everything you need to know about twirling your tassels. Tassel twirling is one of the most classic burlesque skills that every performer should and can perfect, and The Fox is on a quest to make sure that happens in a fun, safe environment. You will learn about different pasties, adhesives, tassels, techniques and a bit of history about twirling. And after a bit of chat, you will learn all of the basic twirling techniques for assels and tassels with some individualized attention to make sure that you are as successful as you can be. and for boy/bois special attention will be paid to your specific tassel issues, so come packing! Please wear form fitting pants for assel twirling and know that we will all be baring our breasts. Pasties will be available for purchase or borrowing…and of course you are more than welcome to rock your own spinners!

Jett Adore “Secrets of Stage Presence” – Saturday, 3:30-4:45

How do you mesmerize an audience? What is stage presence and how can you achieve it? Unlock the tools to combat self-consciousness and stage fright, learn about “Active Intension” onstage, and find the burlesque superstar within you! Jett will workshop techniques for creating, rehearsing, and performing burlesque, all from an actor’s perspective. He outlines his “Five S’s of Burlesque”, vital components to achieve the full potential of your star quality. Bring a rehearsal boa if you have one and note-taking materials.
