Local author and vintage baseball historian and re-creator, Roger P. Hadix, will be signing his newly released book “Baseball in Colorado Springs” at the Manitou Springs Heritage Center from 6:00-9:00 pm, Friday, July 26th. The Heritage Center will also be opening an exhibit featuring memorabilia and information on the history of baseball in the region this same evening.
Part of Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of Sports series, Baseball in Colorado Springs is a pictorial history boasting more than 200 vintage images. Professional baseball arrived in the area in 1901 and a number of local players have risen to play in the Major Leagues. The book provides readers with a unique opportunity to reconnect with this truly American game that had a significant role in the area’s recreational history.
Hadix is a resident of Colorado Springs and works for First Commercial Bank. He also plays in the Colorado Vintage Base Ball Association. In regard to his reason for writing the book, he stated “Many people have written about the rich history of the Pikes Peak Region, however baseball has been somewhat neglected. Over the years, after sharing my knowledge about baseball in Colorado Springs, people have told me I should write a book on the subject…so I did!”
The complimentary exhibit, Vintage Baseball in the Pikes Peak Region will feature photos and artifacts illustrating little-known and forgotten facts about the baseball of yesteryear in Manitou Springs and the region. Hadix has even recreated two uniform shirts that appear in the book – the 1911 Cave of the Winds-Manitou shirt loaned to the Manitou Springs High School for that season and the 1882 Denver and Rio Grande Reds shirt.
