Two opportunities remain for teacher recertification credits at OJC‏

Two more classes are being offered through Otero Junior College this summer for teachers looking for recertification opportunities. Deadlines for registration and dates classes meet vary by course.

Energizers and Brain Breaks (EDU 175-001), taught by Darlene Blackford, will meet Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Wheeler Hall room 113 on the OJC campus. The deadline for registration is July 3. This workshop teaches strategies for implementing short, active “brain breaks” during the class period to refresh and refocus the learner. Research on “brain-based learning” supports interactive, hands-on activities to engage students and invigorate classrooms. This workshop presents ideas and approaches for teachers from primary through high school.

Dance – Part of the Physical Education Standards – Practical Strategies (EDU 175-002), also taught by Blackford, will meet Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The deadline to register is July 8. Dance activities and choreography can be incorporated into physical education classes in a variety of user-friendly ways. This workshop introduces participants to the basics of “dance”, and provides a variety of engaging activities that students in many grade levels will enjoy. Although the workshop is targeted for physical education instructors, any educator could use the skills. No previous dance training is necessary.

For in-state tuition, the courses run $50 per credit hour with the College Opportunity Fund. To register for any of the recertification classes, stop by the Student Services Center located on south San Juan Avenue in La Junta. For more information call (719) 384-6831.
