The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (39-32) committed three errors and allowed 16 hits in a 16-4 loss to the Tacoma Rainiers (44-30) on an afternoon matinee at Security Service Field. The loss ties the series at one and puts the Sky Sox back to 3.5 games behind the Rainiers for first place in the division.
In the first inning the game got off to a tough start for the Sox when Greg Golson dropped the ball in center field to allow Abraham Almonte to reach first base. Almonte would then come around to score in the first inning on a single by Dustin Ackley. Ackley would be plated on the next at-bat when Alex Liddi belted a homer down the left-field line to give the Rainiers the early 3-0 lead.
Colorado Springs fought back in the bottom of the first inning when Golson led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. Corey Dickerson would then would walk to put two men on for Ryan Wheeler who drove them both home with a single to cut the lead down to one.
Rainier’s starter Brandon Mauer left the game after the first inning due to an injury and was replaced by Jonathon Arias who threw three straight scoreless innings to begin his relief appearance.
Starting pitcher Corey Riordan(L, 4-2) gave up a home run in the second inning, but pitched a scoreless third. The Rainiers would threaten again the in fourth inning when Rich Poythress reached on another dropped ball by Golson. Golson then threw the ball away to allow Poythress to reach third. After a walk by Tenbrink, Poythress was plated on a sacrifice fly by Jason Jaramillo to make it 5-2 Tacoma.
Tacoma would break the game wide open in the top of the fifth when they scored six runs. Reliever Michael Solbach came into the game for Riordan to start the inning and gave up two straight singles and then issued two straight walks before recording an out. Solbach then gave up an RBI single before being taken out of the game in favor of C.J. Fick. Fick didn’t fair much better than Solbach, allowing two singles and throwing a wild pitch to give the Rainiers the 11-2 lead.
In the bottom of that inning the Sky Sox attempted to get back into the game when they loaded the bases on singles by Wheeler and Dickerson and a walk by McBride. Bobby LaFromboise then came into the game and allowed another two-run single to Ryan Wheeler. The Sox would be held off the board for the rest of the game, but the Rainiers were not done scoring.
Tacoma would add three more runs in the sixth on a three-run triple by designated-hitter Carlos Peguero and two more in the eighth on a two-run double by the DH.
Tomorrow both teams will return to Security Service Field for the third game of the series. Right-hander Drew Carpenter (1-3, 5.21) will face-off against Hector Noesi (1-1, 7.63) on Military Appreciation Day which is scheduled to start at 7:05 PM MT.
