OJC offers STEM Seeds camp for young learners July 15-17‏

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Seeds Camp will provide an opportunity to participate in classes that will plant the seeds of scientific discovery and inquiry in students entering kindergarten to second grade in the fall. Camp courses are available July 15 through July 17.

Among the camp courses available, choices include two classes that meet for two days and two that meet only one day.  Registration fees for two-day courses are $10. One-day courses are $5 each. Students can sign up for one or all of the available experiences.

“A Bug’s Life”, the first of the two-day learning opportunities, allows young entomologists to learn about the difference between bugs and insects, study their life cycles, and actively research common insects. This course runs Monday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

Also offered July 15 and July 16, “To Infinity and Beyond” will begin at 10:00 a.m. and run until 11:15 a.m. Focused on the basics of astronomy, participants in this camp will engage in activities about the planets, moon and stars.

In “Soapy Science,” which will be offered Wednesday, July 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., participants will enjoy learning about air and using a variety of tools to create unique bubbles. Young chemists will experiment with different soapy solutions to make the strongest and biggest bubbles.

The final option, “Diary of a Worm,” to be held Wednesday, July 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., will allow students to explore how worms are our friends. Young agricultural scientists will learn about worms and their importance to the soil.

“STEM Seeds is for our youngest participants, students entering kindergarten through second grade,” said Yolonda Jaramillo, STEM Grant Activity Director. “We are really excited to add this camp to our STEM camp schedule. Young children begin their first scientific discoveries with observations and questioning why. As STEM “seeds” they are where it all begins.”

Registrations will be accepted online at www.ojc.edu or by calling Yolonda Jaramillo at (719) 384-6868.
