USA Triathlon National Team members Gwen Jorgensen and Sarah Groff raced their way to top-10 finishes on Saturday at the ITU World Triathlon Madrid, the fourth stop of the eight-race International Triathlon Union World Triathlon Series.
Jorgensen (St. Paul, Minn.) logged a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, 44 seconds on the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run course to finish fourth and maintain her No. 1 ranking in the series. Fellow Olympian Groff (Hanover, N.H.) pushed the pace on the swim and the bike and finished seventh in 2:06:26, her 10th top-10 finish in the World Triathlon Series over the past three seasons.
Great Britain’s Non Stanford won her first ITU World Triathlon Series event in 2:04:39. Anne Haug of Germany took second in 2:05:05 and British teammate Jodie Stimpson rounding out the podium in 2:05:14. Visit triathlon.org for a complete recap from ITU.
Groff was in the lead group of five coming out of the water, joined by Spain’s Caroline Routier, Pamela Oliveira from Brazil, Italian Alice Betto and New Zealand’s Nicky Samuels. On the tough, hilly bike course, Groff and Samuels split from the pack on a breakaway before they were caught in lap 6. The lead pack swelled to 24 women, and Jorgensen was in the chase pack, more than 30 seconds down.
On the run, Jorgensen again showed her dominance on the run portion and posted the second fastest 10k run split of the day to move into fourth place. Groff maintained a solid position exiting T2, holding her ground against most of the pack for her second seventh-place finish of the season.
“When I have a race like today, it shows me that I do have a lot of work to do on the swim and the bike, and those girls are really good, so that’s what I’m focused on,” Jorgensen said. “I’m planning to do the rest of the races and I want to focus on each race and prepare myself the best I can.”
Though Jorgensen finished just outside the podium, she earned enough points to maintain top position in the ITU World Triathlon Series rankings, just 60 points ahead of Haug. Groff moved to 15th in the overall rankings.
The men will be in action in Madrid on Sunday with Jarrod Shoemaker (Clermont, Fla.) and Tommy Zaferes (Santa Cruz, Calif.) set to represent the U.S.
