Crowley County Homicide Suspect Arrested in California

Olney Springs homicide suspect William Donnell III (DOB: 08/08/1980) was arrested at a California Port of Entry site as he attempted to cross back into the United States from Mexico on June 14, 2013.

A warrant was issued for Donnell for his alleged connection to the murder of his girlfriend (29-year-old Tara Martinez) of Olney Springs, Colorado in Crowley County on February 19, 2013.

Deputies with the Crowley County Sheriff’s Office were called to a trailer in the 200 block of Schuyler Avenue just after 2:00 a.m. on February 19 after family members found Martinez deceased in the residence. Deputies indicated she’d been shot.

The Crowley County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the case.

CBI agents and sheriff’s deputies followed-up on numerous leads in the months following the death of Martinez. Donnell was contacted by a US Customs and Border Protection officer when Donnell attempted to reenter the United States at the San Ysidro (Yuh-See-Dro) Port of Entry in California from Tijuana, Mexico.

Donnell was contacted with an undisclosed amount of marijuana in his possession, and was later identified through a fingerprint-based check after providing false identification.

CBI continues to investigate the case in conjunction with the Crowley County Sheriff’s Office and 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Donnell will be extradited to Colorado where he will face first degree murder charges.
