Leslie Ivan, a freshman at Otero Junior College from Colorado City, will compete in the NJCAA Women’s Golf national tournament. The tournament will be held May 13-16 at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.
Ivan is no stranger to golfing in pressure situations, having golfed in tournaments since the age of 10 years and finished in the state golf tournament in the top third all four years of high school. To make it to this tournament required grace under pressure.
To qualify for the tournament, Ivan had to meet the standards set by Region IX, including maintaining an average of 85 for all tournaments. To meet this requirement, Ivan had to shoot155 or under at the Trinidad State Invitational and she finished with a 153.
“This season I started out really well, but then my play went downhill. I thought I had no chance of making it,” said Ivan. “I needed low scores that I had never gotten before. I shot my best consecutive two rounds ever to qualify.”
It’s no mystery where Ivan gets her talent. Her father Prim Ivan is the golf pro at Hollydot Golf Course in Colorado City. He was at the Trinidad tournament when she qualified for the national tournament and was able to break the news to her personally.
Head Coach Joe McClain was thrilled with her performance at the Trinidad State Invitational and throughout the season. “Leslie is a great person and she is very talented as a golfer. She is level-headed and she listens and learns.”
Although Ivan is excited about making the tournament, she remains humble. When asked her focus for the tournament, Ivan stated, “I am not worrying about it. I got there. It is a great accomplishment just to get there. I am going to go out and play golf like I always do.”
Ivan’s parents and Coach McClain will join her on her trip and provide support. “It has been a great experience working with Coach. He is always there to help you out. I am glad he will be there to coach me.”
Ivan has signed her letter of intent to play again next season for the Lady Rattlers.
