Practical Nurse pinning set for June 1

Otero Junior College will award 23 certificates of Practical Nursing in ceremonies on Saturday, June 1 at the Ed Stafford Theatre in the OJC Humanities Center. Speakers for the ceremony will be nursing faculty members Denise Root, Jackye Johnson and Kim Montejano. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m., followed by a reception in the Humanities Center lobby.


Students completing the full-time Practical Nursing Certificate Program are from communities throughout Colorado and across the nation. The students have completed at least 11 months of full-time study in addition to completing related course work prior to admission into the nursing program.


Successful completion of the Practical Nursing program will allow the graduate to submit an application to the State Board of Nursing for the State Licensure Examination. Upon passing the state exam, graduates will receive the distinction of being a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

The Otero Junior College Nursing program offers three educational options, the Associate Degree in Nursing (RN), Practical Nursing Certificate (LPN), and Nursing Assistant Certification. The RN and LPN programs are offered to students on the basis of either a full-time student, attending classes five days a week, or enrollment in the Non-traditional, Evenings and Weekend (NEW) program, that allows students to attend class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and have clinical experiences on weekend.
