Lady Rattler Softball wins Region IX Tournament

OJC will host District E championship series May 9 and 10

The Lady Rattler Softball team fought long and hard for the title of 2013 Region IX Champions. Long is an understatement.  The final game, played against Western Nebraska Community College on their turf, went 11 innings before a victor could be declared.  The Rattlers pulled off a 2-1 victory in the final game.

The Lady Rattlers battled for 10 innings to win the second game of the three-game regional championship series to stay alive after losing the first game to Western Nebraska.

“All three games were intense,” said Ben Garcia, head coach for OJC Softball. “It was the toughest set of games I’ve ever been associated with.  No one wanted to lose.”

The 2013 Lady Rattlers join a long tradition of excellence. Otero Junior College boasts Region IX Champion softball teams in 1998, 2000-2007 and 2009.

Otero Junior College will host the District E Championship series on May 9 and 10 versus Butler Community College, currently number one in the national poll. The first two games will be held Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Tippy Martinez Field.  If a third game is necessary, it will be played on Friday, May 10 beginning at 1 p.m. at Tippy Martinez Field.

“We are excited just to play in the District E Championship, but not happy just to be there,” said Garcia.  “It has been a long, draining season, but we are playing very well.  Tayler (Hall, pitcher) is as healthy as she’s been all season. If Jess (Romine) gets on base, we’re good, but anyone in the lineup is a possible contributor.”

The winner from the District E Championship series will advance to the 2013 Division I Softball National Championship to May 15 – 18 Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah.

Otero Junior College invites the community to come cheer on their Lady Rattler Softball team at Tippy Martinez Field May 9 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and, if the series requires, May 10 at 1 p.m.  Admission will be $6 for adults, $4 for students.  Children under 10 will be admitted for free
