Latinitas Hosts College Chica Conference San Antonio
10 Years Publishing the First Hispanic Girls Magazine: Latinitas Focuses on “El Futuro”
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund concluded in 2009 that 41 percent of Hispanic females nationwide do not graduate with their class in four years – if they graduate at all. Combating such grave statistics, Latinitas (www.latinitasmagazine.org) uses digital media while capitalizing on the impact of mentors to demystify the challenges of getting and going to college. The first and only magazine made for and by young Latinas, Latinitas is partnering with University of Incarnate Word and its students for a day of media and technology workshops focused on college attainment, financing and culture for middle and high school students.
College Chica is Latinitas’ signature conference model and will be travelling a circuit that includes Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and El Paso, TX in 2013. Girls ages 9-18 are invited for a day of fun digital media education including video production, photography and blogging paired with investigative activities in how to go to college, why it’s important, what it is like and how to afford it.
