Students receive Rising Star Awards

OJC students receive Rising Star Awards

Two Otero Junior College students will be presented with Rising Star awards by the Colorado Community College State Student Advisory Council at a luncheon on April 9 at Front Range Community College Westminster campus. The students are Lauren Connel from Tuscon, Ariz., and Braden Wilson, from Las Animas. Connel and Wilson were chosen for the award by OJC’s Associated Student Government leadership for their campus activities, grade point average and involvement in student leadership.

Lauren Connel is currently pursuing a business degree at OJC with plans to transfer to a four-year institution to continue studies in this area. Connel aspires to work with a non-profit organization that services youth in public relations or fundraising.

Connel competes on the Lady Rattler Soccer team and has been an active member of the President’s Leadership Program.  During her first semester at OJC, she completed over 60 hours of volunteer service at the school and in the community and she continues to serve as a volunteer for a variety of activities this semester.

In addition to community service activities and athletics, Connel enjoys listening to music, traveling, hiking and playing with children.

Braden Wilson grew up in Las Animas, CO and went to Custer County High School in Westcliff, CO. Wilson is in the Pre-Engineering program at OJC and plans to transfer to a four-year college to attain a degree in engineering

As president of Phi Theta Kappa at OJC and a member of the President’s Leadership Program, Wilson has excelled in school and community service. Wilson has also been involved with the Otero Players, OJC’s theater group.

Outside of the college, Wilson serves on the Las Animas Urban Renewal Authority and is an intern with the City of La Junta’s Engineering office. He also sings and plays guitar for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Las Animas.

Fred Boettcher, faculty advisor for OJC’s Associated Student Government organization, said that both awardees have been outstanding assets to OJC.

“We are very pleased to have Lauren and Braden represent OJC as our Rising Star recipients.  They both excel in the classroom and each has provided excellent leadership on our campus,” said Boettcher.
