Colorado Snow Update- 6:30 a.m.

Sunday 6:30am (March 24th)

Significant progress was made overnight and we are down to four highway closures. CDOT remains on full snow shift with about 75 trucks in the Denver metro area, 200 on rest of the front range and eastern plains. 30 trucks will be working the I-70 west corridor for C-470 to Vail. Crews are applying solid de-icer as needed and will work throughout the day to clean up after yesterday’s storm. Some icy and snow packed conditions still exist and motorists should continue to reduce speeds this morning.
Highways that remain closed:

  • US 36 between Byers and Kansas
  • SH 86 between Kiowa and Limon
  • SH 94 between Colorado Springs and US 40
  • SH 96 betweens Eads and Kansas

  • US 385 between Sheridan Lake and Wray
  • US 287/US 40 between Limon and Eads

Saturday 10:00pm

Crews are evaluating conditions on westbound I-70 between Limon and Airpark to see if a reopening is possible tonight, but no word yet. Westbound I-70 between Kansas and Limon and eastbound I-70 from Denver to Kansas will likely remain closed through the night as the storm has now set over Kansas, resulting in closures of I-70 in Kansas.

Saturday 4:45pm

SB I-25 at Fountain and NB and SB I-25 between SH 402 and SH 60 have reopened. Conditions are starting to improve on the I-70 west corridor as well as in the Denver metro area, but there are still some snow packed and icy spots. CDOT will remain on snow shift through the night and into tomorrow with about 75 plows in the Denver metro area and 250 in the remainder of the front range and eastern plains. High winds and poor visibility continue on the eastern plains with gusts between 40-50 MPH.

Two new closures and one modified. Southbound I-25 at SH 402 has reopened, but northbound I-25 remains closed. Forgot SB I-25 at Fountain last time. Travel on the eastern plains is strongly discouraged. Expect long-term closures out east.

New closures to report. As usual, new or modified in red. Closures in the eastern plains will be lengthy. It is snowing a half an inch an hour with 40 MPH gust and sustained winds around 25-30 MPH.

Saturday 6:30am

CDOT crews have been on full snow shift since last night with 73 plows in the Denver metro area, approximately 250 along the rest of the front range and eastern plains and approximately 30 plows on the I-70 corridor from C-470 to Vail. Roads are icy and snow packed and motorists should plan for extra travel time. If traveling to the eastern plains, check road conditions before you leave as additional road closures are possible due to high winds and poor visibility.

Currently, there are several closures in place due to weather as well as numerous chain laws for commercial vehicles. The closures include:
  • I-70 between Airpark and Kansas
  • SH 71 between Limon and Brush
  • US 36 between Byers and Kansas
  • SH 86 between Kiowa and Limon
  • US 385 between Cheyenne Wells and Idalia
One additional note, chains, 4WD or snow tires are required for ALL vehicles traveling on US 285 in Turkey Creek Canyon.
