Crash seriously injuries family near Colorado Springs

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that
seriously injured a family of three on Highway 24, east of Ellicott
Highway.  At 11:45 a.m., a 2012 Hyundai Elantra was traveling
eastbound on Highway 24 when it traveled across a patch of ice on the
roadway and slid into the westbound lane.  A 2010 Lexus LX570 SUV,
traveling westbound, collided head-on with the Hyundai.

The Hyundai’s driver, 22-year-old Alexis Vargas of Orlando, Florida,
and his two passengers–21-year-old Samantha Vargas and a one-year-old
girl–were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening
injuries.  Alexis and Samantha were wearing their seatbelts at the
time of the crash, while the child was restrained in a child-safety

The Lexus’s driver, 59-year-old Billy Masse of Canon City, sustained
minor injuries as a result of the crash.  He was wearing his seatbelt.

Alcohol and/or drug use are not suspected as contributing factors in
the crash at this time.  Excessive speed for the conditions is
considered a contributing factor.

Charges are pending against Vargas, but no citations have been issued.
