Colorado Legislators Will Hear From Foster Care Youth

Presentation focuses on importance of educational stability for kids in foster care

WHAT: The Sixty-ninth General Assembly Colorado Children’s Caucus will receive the third of seven presentations. This presentation will examine the unique educational challenges for children and youth in the child protection system. The presentation will primarily be given by youth who are currently living in an out of home placement or recently experienced the foster care system.

WHY: Nearly two-thirds of former foster youth surveyed by Casey Family Programs in a national alumni study experienced seven or more school moves from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Schools moves for foster youth often results in an unnecessary loss of school credits, which contributes to a dismal foster youth high graduation rate of roughly 50 percent, according to data compiled by the National Working Group on Foster Care and Education.

Of the 39,403 Colorado children and youth involved in an open involvement with the Colorado Department of Human Services in SFY 2011, 70% were school-age children or teens. During that same time period, 65% of the 7,320 children and youth in out of home placement, were school-age children and teens.
