In the last hour or so, several highways on the eastern plains have reopened. Below is a list of the highways still closed as well as the ones that recently reopened.

Still Closed:
SH 71 between Limon and Last Chance
SH 86 between Kiowa and I-70
Now Open:
US 24 between Colorado Springs and Limon
US 40 between Limon and Kansas

We just received word that I-70 is now open in both directions between Aurora and Kansas. In addition, US 287 between Ted’s Place and Wyoming is now open and SH 94 between the El Paso county line and Punkin Center. Some blowing snow and winter driving conditions can still be expected. Crews will now focus on reopening the remaining five highways on the eastern plains which include:

  • Eastbound US 24 between Colorado Springs and Limon
  • US 40 between Limon and Kit Carson
  • US 287 between Eads and Kit Carson
  • SH 71 between Limon and Last Chance
  • SH 86 between Kiowa and I-70

Following last night’s winter storm on the eastern plains and parts of northern Colorado, the following highways remain closed. CDOT’s main priority is to reopen nearly 200 miles of I-70, which will likely occur in phases around mid to late morning/early afternoon. The other highways on the eastern plains are then expected to reopen once I-70 has reopened. CDOT crews are currently working to clear the highway of snow drifts and apply deicing material. Motorists are strongly encouraged to call 511 or visit www.cotrip.org before traveling on the eastern plains today.
The following closures are in place:

  • I-70 between Aurora and Kansas
  • Eastbound US 24 between Colorado Springs and Limon
  • US 40 between Limon and Kit Carson
  • US 287 between Eads and Kit Carson
  • SH 71 between Limon and Last Chance
  • SH 86 between Kiowa and I-70
  • SH 94 between the El Paso County line and Punkin Center
  • US 287 between Fort Collins and the Wyoming state line
The following highways reopened overnight:
  • I-25 between Wellington and the Wyoming state line
  • SH 14 between Ault and Sterling

2/26/13 8:34 pm

There are multiple highway closures on the eastern plains and northern Colorado due to blowing snow and poor visibility. While there is very little snow falling, the winds are around 40 MPH, but the visibility is extremely poor. CDOT crews continue to plow while the highways are closed, but when the highways reopen, motorists can expect icy and snow packed conditions.

The following closures are in place:

I-25 between Wellington and the Wyoming state line
US 287 between Fort Collins and the Wyoming state line
I-70 between Aurora and Kansas
Eastbound US 24 between Colorado Springs and Limon
US 40 between Limon and Kit Carson
US 287 between Eads and Kit Carson
SH 14 between Ault and Sterling
SH 71 between Limon and Last Chance
SH 86 between Kiowa and I-70
SH 94 between the El Paso County line and Punkin Center

Before traveling to the eastern plains tonight or even tomorrow morning, motorists are strongly encouraged to call 511 or visit www.cotrip.org for current road condition information.
