Otero Junior College will continue to offer SilverSneakers exercise classes Spring Semester. Class hours for Muscular Strength and Range of Movement will be 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in the OJC Fitness Center.
Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. The comprehensive program addresses the physical, mental, and social needs of Medicare-eligible members (usually 65-plus).
SilverSneakers Muscular Strength and Range of Movement offers improved muscle strength and increased range of movement and flexibility. Regular exercise can reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, improve balance to help prevent falls and improve mental health and mood.
“Participants in the program have stated that they can feel their balance and coordination getting better,” reports Beverlee Miller, OJC Fitness Center Associate and instructor for the class.
“Improved balance and coordination can help to prevent falls,” Miller added. “The class focuses on being present in the moment and paying attention to your body and its movements which can also help to prevent falls.”
Current participants range in age from 56 years to 80+ years. All exercises can be modified to each student’s level of ability. This includes increasing the challenge for more advanced participants.
“The class can be as hard as you want it to be,” explained Miller.
The SilverSneakers exercise program at OJC allows members of Healthways Fitness Program access to the OJC Fitness Center’s classes for older adults and access to the equipment in the Fitness Center. New participants in the program are welcome to join at any time.
Kurt Long, director of the OJC Fitness Center, said that Medicare-eligible adults should check with their health plan provider to see if they qualify for a free membership.
If an individual is not qualified for free membership, the SilverSneaker MSROM Class is available by paying for the one credit hour course to attend the class only. If access to the fitness center is also desired, participants must pay for a two credit hour course. These credits must be renewed each semester.
In addition to the SilverSneakers classes being offered this spring, community members can also enroll in Yoga, Aerobics, Step Aerobics/Body Bar, Zumba or Racquetball. Yoga will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m.; Aerobics will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 to 12:50 p.m.; Step Aerobics/Body Bar will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; and Zumba will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 6:50 pm and Saturdays from 9:00 to 9:50 a.m. Days and times for the Racquetball class are yet to be announced. Community members may gain access to the fitness center by enrolling in two credit hours of classes at the college.
