RTD to light up West Rail Line 6th Avenue Bridge

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) will flip the switch to light the 6th Avenue Bridge along the West Rail Line on January 23 at 6:00 p.m.

This milestone will be celebrated at a lighting ceremony at Lakewood Fordland, 11595 West 6th Avenue, on the northeast corner of the 6th Avenue frontage road and Union Boulevard.  RTD Board Chair Lorraine Anderson and General Manager Phil Washington will pull the switch to activate the lights and a train will run across the newly lit bridge. The ceremony marks the end of construction activities and signifies the start of the countdown to grand opening of the West Rail Line on April 26.

“After years of hard work and determination by so many people across the district, the lighting of this signature bridge is an exciting milestone for the West Rail Line as we quickly move toward opening day,” said RTD Board Chair Lorraine Anderson.

The 6th Avenue Bridge, designed by David Evans and Associates and IBI Group, and built by Denver Transit Construction Group’s subcontractor Edward Kraemer and Sons, will be lit by LED lights that are attached to the 44 cables that span the bridge. Once lit, the lights will remain on.

The 12.1-mile West Rail Line is the first rail line of RTD’s FasTracks project to start construction and will be the first to open to the public on April 26, 2013 – eight months ahead of the original schedule. The West Rail Line will operate between Denver Union Station in downtown Denver and the Jefferson County Government Center in Golden, serving Denver, Lakewood, the Denver Federal Center, Golden and Jefferson County.

FasTracks is RTD’s voter-approved transit expansion program to build 122 miles of commuter rail and light rail, 18 miles of bus rapid transit service, add 21,000 new parking spaces, redevelop Denver Union Station and redirect bus service to better connect the eight-county District.
