Otero Junior College is offering a 3-credit hour Health Navigator class during Spring Semester.  Health Navigator is a growing role in the health and human services industry.

A Health Navigator works to support patients in their efforts to stay healthy or to find answers in today’s complex health care system.  By serving as a link between patients, providers, and community resources, the Navigator is essential in guiding patients toward preventative care and reducing health care expenses.

Overview of Health Navigation (CHW 275) will orient students to the range of health issues common in clients they will encounter, the range of physical health and social service agencies that can provide client services, and the skills Navigators must have in communicating effectively with their clients.

Topics for the course include medical terminology, common barriers to health, preventive care and cultural competency.  Students completing the course will earn certification in Motivational Interviewing at no additional charge.

Overview of Health Navigation (CHW 275) would benefit nurses, case managers, social workers, mental health professionals, emergency medical personnel, and other community members who may be interested in helping others toward better health.  Health care providers may wish to consider sending current staff to the course to increase skills in patient navigation.

The course will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. from January 16 through May 1, 2013.  There will be 16 additional laboratory hours required the week of February 11.  The main instructor for the course will be Patty Johnson, certified family nurse practitioner.  Guest speakers from various area agencies will also provide insight on specific information relevant to their areas of expertise.
