The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle rollover
that occurred on I-25, approximately 7 miles north of Wellington.
Shortly after 6 a.m., a 2001 Dodge pickup was traveling northbound
when it traveled off the right side of the roadway and rolled multiple
The Dodge’s driver, 31-year-old Matthew Himberger of Milliken, was
wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained moderate
injuries. The passenger, a 25-year-old male whose name is being
withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, was not wearing his
seatbelt at the time of the crash; he was ejected during the rollover,
sustained fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alcohol and drug use are not suspected as contributing factors at this
time. Excessive speed for the roadway and weather
conditions–freezing rain and fog–is suspected as a contributing
The fatal crash was the most severe of several early-morning
incidents, necessitating a four-hour closure of I-25 between
Wellington and the Wyoming border. The aforementioned weather
conditions created extremely icy roadways, and several crashes and
slide-offs were reported during that time.
