Baby abandoned in dumpster

On December 6, 2012, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a report that an abandoned newborn had been found in a dumpster.

After a thorough investigation by CSPD and the El Paso County Department of Human Services, it was determined that the baby had never been in the dumpster. The investigation revealed that the baby’s juvenile mother had successfully hidden her pregnancy from her family.

On December 6, 2012, she gave birth and then claimed to find the baby in a dumpster in order to explain the baby’s sudden presence. The baby was never in the dumpster and was not injured in any way.

DHS is actively involved with the baby and services are being provided to the baby’s mother. A legal action has been initiated in the juvenile/civil courts, which is being handled by the El Paso County Attorney’s Office. CSPD and the District Attorney’s Office have consulted with DHS.

After careful consideration and deliberation, CSPD and the District Attorney’s Office have decided that the situation is most appropriately handled in the juvenile/civil court system and not in the criminal courts. Based on that, no criminal charges will be filed at this time.
