For the seventh consecutive year, Be Local Northern Colorado will be operating the Be Local Winter Farmers Market at the Opera Galleria in downtown Fort Collins. The first market was this Saturday, November 10th, with the next market this coming Saturday, November 17th. As in years past, shoppers can come to the Winter Farmers Market to shop for local fresh produce, meats, cheeses, breads, and more from their favorite farmer, ranchers, and producers from throughout Northern Colorado.
What began as a single market in 2006, the Winter Farmers Markets have grown steadily each year. With 11 winter markets last year, Be Local decided to add 3 more market dates for 2012/2013 winter season.
“After last winter’s successful market season, many local farmers and ranchers supported the idea of adding more market dates to the Winter Farmers Markets. And we agreed, so there will now be 14 winter markets for the community to attend,” says Michael Baute, Food and Farm Program Coordinator for Be Local. “People in this community love to shop for local, fresh foods at farmers markets, Be Local decided to increase our winter market dates to meet this growing demand for fresh, local food from the community, “ he continues.
Last season, Be Local unveiled a ‘2 for 1 Market Match’ program, in which SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program – food stamp) recipients could double their benefits up to $20 a person at the Winter Farmers Markets. Be Local solicited private donations to support this program, and will continue the program this winter.
With the support of the Bohemian Foundation’s Music Event Fund grant, local musicians will be playing their brand of melodies and rhythms for shoppers at each of the Winter Farmers Markets. Also, the ‘Kid Zone’, new this winter, will feature fun and educational activities for the kids, including puppets shows, arts and craft, kids music, and more. The Kid Zone will be offered the last market of each month, and is sponsored by local businesses with the desire to help educate the next generation of local food enthusiasts about the importance of healthy local food systems.
Be Local invites the Northern Colorado community to enjoy all that the Winter Farmers Markets has to offer on the following dates: Nov. 10th and 17th; Dec. 1st, 15th, and 22nd; Jan. 12th, 19th, and 26th; Feb. 9th, 16th, and 23rd; March 9th and 23rd, and April 6th. Markets are from 10 AM to 2 PM, and held at the Opera Galleria, 123 College Avenue, in downtown Fort Collins.
