Team USA Heads to Auckland for ITU Aquathlon Worlds

International Triathlon Union World Championship action will get under way Wednesday with nearly 70 age group multisport athletes set to represent the United States in the 2012 ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

Aquathlon Worlds is the first of seven events to be contested over four days in Auckland, which will also host the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final on Oct. 20-21. More than 400 Americans are scheduled to be in action over the course of the week, which features sprint and Olympic-distance age group triathlon world championships, as well as paratriathlon, junior and under-23 events. Visit usatriathlon.org for full coverage of each event.
Wednesday’s aquathlon event will feature a 1,000-meter swim, followed by a 5-kilometer run.
Six members of Team USA qualified for ITU Worlds with national championship wins at the 2012 Aquathlon National Championship on July 28 in Mercer Island, Wash., and are in search of world titles in Auckland:

  • Brent Demarest (Overall and 17&U, Charleston, S.C.)
  • Matt Koenigs (30-34, Snohomish, Wash.)
  • Larry Mayse (60-64, Alpharetta, Ga.)
  • Melanie Peddle (25-29, Boulder, Colo.)
  • Shannon Scovel (17&U, Cary, N.C.)
  • Keith Szot (45-49, Redmond, Wash.)

Ten 2011 aquathlon world medalists also will be in action, including Demarest, the defending 16-17 aquathlon world champion. Peggy McDowell-Cramer (70-74, Santa Monica, Calif.) and Dave Robinette (70-74, Centennial, Colo.) also seek to defend their 2011 world championship titles. Silver medalists from last year’s event in Beijing Bullet Bales (65-69, Glendale, Calif.), Erica Binger (35-39, Minneapolis, Minn.) and Marshall Wakat (70-74, Charleston, S.C.); and 2011 bronze medalists Andrew Farrell (40-44, Orlando, Fla.), Carole Mawson (65-69, Woodside, Calif.), Sten Mawson (65-69, Woodside, Calif.) and Elaine Morison (50-54, Lafayette, Calif.) will all seek another podium finish.
