Three countries in Latin America are members of the G20. It is a region experiencing significant political and economic change-and long ignored by the United States-but it is playing an increasingly important role on the world stage.
 What kind of voices will we hear?
Formerly Second Vice-President and Minister of National Planning and Economic Policy for Costa Rica, Dr. Casas-Zamora is the Secretary for Political Affairs at the Organization of American States. He has also served as Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution, an international consultant, and General Coordinator of the United Nations Development Program’ National Human Development Report for Costa Rica. He holds a Law degree from the University of Costa Rica, and masters and PhD degrees in Political Science from the universities of Essex and Oxford, respectively. He has authored several studies on political finance, elections, citizen security, and civil-military relations in Latin America. He won the 2004 PhD Prize of the European Consortium for Political Research for his thesis, Paying for Democracy in Latin America, which was published in 2005. He was selected as Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2007.
