Jerri Marr to keynote for Girls’ STEM Conference at UCCS Friday

Giving Girls Roots in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will welcome the girls at 8:30 a.m., followed by keynote, Jerri Marr.

At 12:15 p.m., City Council President Pro Tem Jan Martin will present a proclamation to Rosemary Pierce, Executive Director of the Women’s Resource Agency for the International Day of the Girl.

Lunch panelists will include:

MIRENDA BURKE, Information Systems Technology Consultant serving as manager of projects for Verizon Business, Wells Fargo, Hewlett Packard, and IBM.

BRIGADIER GENERAL DANA CAPOZZELLA, Assistant Adjutant General – Army National Guard and serves as Commander, Colorado National Guard. Also, Civilian Occupation – Compliance Officer and Operations Manager at Cascade Investment Group

SILVIA JONASSON, Quality Engineer, Spectranetics, Inc., Colorado Springs, CO

LT. COL. JENNIFER REEVES, Deputy Commander, 50th Operations Group, 50th Space Wing, Schriever Air Force Base

BRANDY WILLIAMS, Council Member At-Large, City of Colorado Springs and a Licensed Professional Engineer with her own company, Brandy Wine Consulting, Inc.

QUEEN BROWN, Panel Moderator, – Owner of Queen E. Brown & Associates Management Consultants and Adjunct Mathematics Professor, University of Phoenix

All speakers, committee members, volunteers, and students who have signed media releases will be available for interviews and photos.

Purpose: The mission of this program is to spur girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). It is STEM fields which promise the best opportunities for individual economic self-sufficiency for women and an area where girls are typically underrepresented.

Participants: The program is open to approximately 350 middle school girls (grades 6-8) from the Pikes Peak Region school districts. The participating districts/schools select the girls to attend.

When: Friday, October 12, 2012, 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Where: Gallogly Events Center, University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS).

What: A series of interactive workshops, designed to engage girls in STEM content, will be taught by local professionals and university educators. These sessions will include a variety of engineering, chemistry, and physics interactive experiments and dynamic hands-on activities. Additional speakers are prominent role models in the industry. During lunch there will be door prize drawings.

11:15-12:00 Session III

12:15-1:15 STEM Career Panelists during Lunch

1:30 P.M. All students on buses for return to schools
