Otero Junior College’s Automotive Technology program is the co-sponsor of the 3rd Annual Shine N’ Show Car Show on Saturday September 8, 2012 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the corner of 15th and Sante Fe Avenue, just one block south of the La Junta City Park.
“Students will be on hand to talk about the program and demonstrate some of the new technology that is being used in our program,” said Doug Gabehart, automotive program director. “Students will also have entries for the car show that they have restored or are currently in the process of restoring,” he said.
Otero Junior College’s Automotive Technology program is designed to prepare students to obtain entry level employment in maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of automotive systems. Students may choose to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology or certificates in the area of Automotive Service Technician, Automatic Transmission and Transaxle, Brakes, Engine Performance, Engine Repair, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, Manual Drive Train and Axles, and Suspension and Steering.
Registrations for the car show will continue to be accepted throughout this week with open registration being done from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday just prior to the start of the show. Entry fee for the first car is $10 which includes a gift bag with the second entry fee of only $5. Entry forms and information are available on the OJC website at www.ojc.edu/ShineNShow.aspx or by calling Debbie Phillips, 719-384-6863 or stopping by Humanities Center Room 119. Entrants can do direct online registration or print the form and mail it in with registration fee. Entry packets pick up and vehicle display for entrants will be Saturday from 9-11 a.m.
OJC’s Shine n’ Show car show is for everyone who has a vehicle they would like to share with the community. All cars from the superbly polished to the ones that are a process in works are welcome to go on display.
Debbie Phillips, OJC’s coordinator of campus and community events, stated “The OJC Shine N’ Show car show is not a judged event, rather it is an opportunity for car and truck owners to tell a story about their vehicle and share the pride they have in their vehicle with the public. There will be gift bags for all entrants and several prizes to be determined by visitor balloting. A $100 gift certificate sponsored by Valley Auto Parts NAPA will be awarded to the People’s Choice along with various prizes for the furthest traveled, oldest vehicle, and most unique just to name a few.”
This year’s show will feature a special kid’s category for children 14 and under. Kids are encouraged to enter their custom bikes, pedal cars, go-carts and whatever they have that is unique and has been customized in some fashion by the entrant. Kid’s entries are free and they will receive a t-shirt and gift bag for entering. Prizes will be awarded that day in a variety of categories.

This car is a family treasurer that has been maintained and kept in the family since its purchase. Last year Savoie shared stories from his grandfather about this vehicle with attendees of the car show. A wide variety of vehicles will be available at the 3rd Annual OJC Shine N’ Show Car Show on Saturday September 8. The show will be held on the corner of 15th Street and Santa Fe Ave., one block south of the La Junta City Park.
