Greater Denver metro area voters created the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District in 1988 so that scientific and cultural facilities could provide for the enlightenment, entertainment, inspiration and education of the public and contribute to the economic well-being of the region. This is accomplished through the production, presentation, exhibition, advancement or preservation of art, music, theater, dance, zoology, botany, natural history or cultural history.

Between 1989 and 2011, SCFD distributed nearly $710 million to over 500 unique organizations via the 0.1% (1¢ on every $10) retail sales and use tax in the seven-county District. Counties comprising the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District include Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas (except for Castle Rock and Larkspur) and Jefferson.
