Duathletes Set to Tackle ITU World

U.S. Duathletes Set to Tackle ITU World Championships this Weekend 

 

Talented group of 174 Americans to race in Nancy, France

 

Comprised of 160 age-groupers, 10 elites and four paraduathletes, a talented United States contingent will be in action this weekend at the ITU Duathlon World Championships in Nancy, France.

Elite and paraduathlon action is set for Saturday, followed by the age-groupers Sunday. The elite and age group events are contested in a 10-kilometer run, 40-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run format, while the paraduathlon race consists of a 5k run, 20k bike and a 2.5k run. In action Saturday will be the 10 U.S. elites, led by 2012 elite duathlon national champions D’Ann Arthur (Dallas, Texas) and Dan Hedgecock (Minneapolis, Minn.). Joining Arthur in the women’s race are Monica Schoeneck (Muskego, Wis.), Rachel Chambers (Sarasota, Fla.) and Heidi Sarna (Chicago, Ill.). Six Americans will be in action on the elite men’s side with Hedgecock leading the way. Also slated to compete are: Ryan Giuliano (Schaumburg, Ill.), who was fifth at Elite Duathlon Nationals; Josh Merrick (Alamosa, Colo.), who was 12th a year ago at Elite Duathlon Worlds; and members of the USA Triathlon Collegiate Recruitment Program Christopher Baird (Boston, Mass.), Dan Feeney (Wilmington, Del.) and Jason Pedersen (Simi Valley, Calif.). In Saturday’s paraduathlon competition, 2012 national champions Robin Caruso (TRI-4, Ridgefield, Conn.) and David Kyle (TRI-3, Athens, Ala.) will be in action, as will Michael Johnston (TRI-5, San Diego, Calif.) and Gerard Ah-Fook (TRI-1, Tucson, Ariz.). Kyle and Johnston were silver medalists at 2011 ITU Duathlon Worlds.

 

On Sunday, the 160 U.S. age-groupers representing Team USA will be led by a talented collection of national champions and world medalists. Winners from 2012 Duathlon Nationals in Oro Valley, Ariz., set to compete in France include:

 

* Corrie Kristick (25-29, Houston, Texas)

* Gail Kattouf (35-39, Greenville, S.C.)

* Nicole Sin Quee (40-44, New York, N.Y.)

* Kirsten Chapman (45-49, Edmond, Okla.)

* Scott Hajicek (55-59, Lakewood, Colo.)

* Corinna Goodman (70-74, Oro Valley, Ariz.)

* William Logan (70-74, Perryville, Mo.)

* Ken Fleischhacker (75-79, Littleton, Colo.)

 

Additionally, nine medalists from 2011 Duathlon Worlds will look for a return to the podium, including 2011 age group world champions Kattouf, Marty Stiegmann (50-54, Glen Allen, Va.), Edward Maruna (80-84, Arvada, Colo.) and Edwin Bixenstine (85-89, Kent, Ohio).

 

Age-groupers competing in Nancy qualified for Team USA with a top-18 finish (rolling down to 25th place) at April’s 2012 USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championship in Oro Valley, Ariz.
