Matheus Goncalves scored both goals, including the game-winner 1:06 into the second overtime, to lead the Drexel men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Air Force Sunday afternoon at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the win, Drexel improved to 1-1-1, while the Falcons fell to 0-2-1.
Following a scoreless first half, Goncalves put the Dragons ahead 1-0 in the 50th minute when Fabio Machado corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and sent a through pass to Goncalves, who beat Air Force goalie Matt Underwood from about 12 yards out to the far post.
Air Force responded in the 78th minute when freshman Abinadi Samayoa notched the first goal of his career by scoring from right in front of the net after teammate Zane Dydasco fired a shot that Drexel keeper Tim Washam saved but could not corral. Samayoa’s goal was the first of the season for the Falcons.
The Falcons had a golden opportunity to take the lead when sophomore Matt Payne took a pass from Kevin Durr behind the Dragon defense but his shot went just wide of the net.
After a scoreless first overtime, Drexel’s Michele Pataia started the winning play by gathering a loose ball and finding Machado down the left side. Just before hitting the end line, Machado sent the ball to the front of the net and Goncalves flew in to send the ball past Underwood from eight yards out.
Air Force outshot Drexel 18-11, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half, but the Dragons held a 6-4 lead in shots on goal. Drexel also had both shots on goal in the overtime periods. Underwood finished the game with four saves, while Washam had three.
The Falcons travel to Philadelphia, Pa., next weekend for the Penn Soccer Classic. Air Force plays at Penn on Friday, Sept. 7 and Villanova at Penn Park on Sunday, Sept. 9.
