Colorado State University –Pueblo has been named a Military Friendly School, in the company of the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities, and trade schools. http://www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/default.aspx The list recognizes higher education institutions that embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.
The 2013 Military Friendly Schools list is compiled by GI Jobs magazine. Inclusion in the list recognizes CSU-Pueblo’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students through services, programs, discounts, scholarships, clubs, networking opportunities, and staff. CSU-Pueblo makes available a broad array of credit and non-credit courses, seminars and workshops for those serving in the military through the Division of Continuing Education As an “on post” University at Fort Carson, CSU-Pueblo promotes classes in Sociology, Sociology with an Emphasis in Criminology, Social Work, Social Science and History. Advising support staff at Fort Carson’s Educational Center assist military members who seek courses at our Pueblo campus, on Fort Carson, at Peterson Air Force Base, and at a distance for TDY ??? students.
Pre-collegiate programs like Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) provide preparatory classes, academic advising, financial aid assistance, and mentorship necessary to support the increasing number of military service members, veterans, and their families as they transition from military to civilian life. The VUB program at CSU-Pueblo is unique because of its partnerships with community colleges in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. CSU-Pueblo recently was awarded a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to assist low-income, first generation military veterans in Pueblo and El Paso counties. Beginning this month, the VUB will serve nearly 125 military veterans each year through an annual grant of $250,000 per year over the next five years.
“Through VUB, partnering institutions, and with the support of CSU-Pueblo, we have created a channel to help navigate students through the various challenges and opportunities found in higher education,” said VUB Director Christopher Beltran.
The University also has a Veterans Educational Benefits office, which assists veterans, active duty, and dependents as they pursue and receive educational benefits. CSU-Pueblo offers in-state tuition to both military members of all branches stationed in Colorado as well as their dependents and family members.
“We recognize the changing needs of our military students with the current down- sizing strategy of the military and are offering a variety of programs that help the new veterans and their families in this transition,” said Barb Borland, Continuing Education program director in the Colorado Springs Citadel Center.
A variety of educational methods—classroom instruction, correspondence courses, on-line courses, conferences, workshops and seminars—are utilized to expand educational access and meet the needs of students at convenient times and settings. Students may earn academic credit toward a degree, study for career advancement, or pursue cultural and avocational interests.
In addition, CSU-Pueblo boasts a thriving Military and Veteran Support Group and, for the past several years, has hosted an all-community veteran’s day ceremony at its newly renovated Southeast Asia Memorial. The names of 623 Colorado service men and women who were killed in the Vietnam War now appear on the renovated Southeast Asia Memorial, which was unveiled as part of a 2011 Veteran’s Day Ceremony. At a cost of more than $86,000, the renovated memorial features new commemorative black granite stone slabs engraved with gold lettering of the names of Colorado’s fallen by service branch.
This year’s Veteran’s Day ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday, November 12 at the Southeast Asia memorial at the northeast corner of the Library and Academic Resources Center.
