Local dancers from Ballet Society of Colorado Springs’ Praise Dance Ensemble will open for the internationally acclaimed American dance company, Ballet Magnificat! at 3:00pm on Sunday, September 23, at Mitchell High School Theater at 1205 Potter Drive. Ballet Magnificat! Omega Company will begin its presentation withBasic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. This unique combination of the toe tapping, flamenco guitar, and the Afro-Cuban rhythms of the band Burlap to Cashmerecombines with exhilarating choreography that will make you want to get out of your seat and join the dance! Following the opening act is the dramatic story The Journey of the Prodigal – a touching tale of forgiveness and restoration set to a mélange of classical ballet, jazz, modern and even some swing dance.

“We are excited to return to Colorado Springs for our fourth appearance in the past three years,” says Company tour director, Erin Beaver. “Colorado Springs has become one of our favorite locations. The scenery is beautiful, but the thing that makes Colorado Springs appeal to us the most is how we feel so warmly welcomed. We travel extensively throughout the world, and there are just some places that stand out- where the people make all the difference- Colorado Springs is one of those places!”

The Journey of the Prodigal lead dancer and Artistic Director of the company is Jiri Sebastian Voborsky, is a Czech-born artist. Voborsky, an internationally recognized choreographer, has created several one-act and full-length ballets. Excerpts of his works have been featured at the USA International Ballet Competition Gala in Jackson, Mississippi.

Praise Dance Ensemble from Ballet Society has been invited once again to open for the production. “I am very much looking forward to having our dancers be part of the production,” says former Ballet Magnificat! dancer, current Ballet Society dance instructor, and Praise Dance Ensemble director, Hanna Atencio. “While I was dancing with the company, it was always a treat when local worship dance groups opened for us. It has been an inspiration to see students at such a young age worship God through dancing.”

Atencio began her dance training began in Nuremberg, Germany, and continued her advance studies at the State Ballet School in Berlin. During her last year of school she was invited to dance with Ballet Dortmund as a guest artist in Swan Lake. Upon graduation she received a contract at the Landesbuehnen Saxonia. In 2006, Hanna moved to Jackson, MS, to be a trainee with Ballet Magnificat!. After two years she was promoted to dance with the Ballet Magnificat! Omega company where she performed and taught throughout the United States as well as internationally in Canada, Israel, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Kosovo, Macedonia, France and Italy.

Several local dance studios are joining forces with Ballet Society of Colorado Springs to ensure the success of this production. “It has been a pleasure to sponsor Ballet Magnificat!‘s production of the powerful story of Corrie ten Boom in The Hiding Place and more recently Before His Throne…BOLDLY!. They have enjoyed full and sometimes sold out audiences at local churches,” says Ballet Society founder and Director, Patricia Hoffman. “This time other local dance studios are joining us in promoting the performance and master classes, as our goal is to have greater community participation in order to justify a larger venue for the truly world class productions Ballet Magnificat! are presenting.”

Flourish Arts, Fountain Arts Center, Revolution Dance, and Turning Pointe studios, are all helping to get the word out. All proceeds from the production and master classes go directly to Ballet Magnificat! which is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-deductible non-profit. “Our staff and volunteers enjoy helping to bring high quality dance productions to Colorado Springs,” says Hoffman. “The time and energy expended to assist Ballet Magnificat! while they are in town seems of little consequence after the thrill of the performance.”

As the world’s premier professional Christian ballet company, Ballet Magnificat! has toured the globe with encouraging and affirming messages created to inspire audiences through dance. For over 25 years they have presented concerts and master classes throughout the United States and the nations of the Czech Republic, Canada, Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica, Singapore, Germany, South Korea, The Netherlands, Slovakia, Poland, Belgium, Greece, France, Italy, Macedonia, Kosovo, Israel, Colombia, The Philippines, People’s Republic of China, Puerto Rico, Switzerland and Cayman Islands.
