The Air Force men’s soccer team survived a barrage of shots by previously undefeated Villanova Sunday and goalie Matt Underwood made nine saves as the Falcons downed the Wildcats, 1-0, at Penn Park in Philadelphia, Pa. The Falcons, who won both of their games at the Penn Soccer Classic this weekend, improved to 2-2-1, while Villanova fell to 4-1.
Villanova outshot the Falcons 25-13 in total shots and 9-1 in shots on goal, with junior Brian Klazura making AFA’s only shot on goal count in the 78th minute with a header off a free kick that was sent into the box by senior Kevin Durr.
Villanova had multiple scoring chances in the game’s first 20 minutes but Underwood stood tall in the first half, making five saves. The Wildcats owned a 13-8 edge in shots and there were a number of chances available at different points in the first 45 minutes. However, the game was deadlocked at zero when the halftime horn sounded.
The contest remained scoreless through most of the second half before Klazura elevated to re-direct a header into the net past ‘Nova keeper John Fogarty at the 77:27 mark. Klazura led the Falcons with three shots.
The Falcons return home to face Oral Roberts University next Friday, Sept. 14 at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
