Seniors Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake completed their perfect weekend Sunday by winning the title of the “A” doubles flight at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. The Falcon duo defeated Klara Supejova and Marija Toncheva of Eastern Michigan, 8-3, in the flight final for their fourth straight win at the tournament.
“This was an outstanding tournament for our team,” said Air Force head coach Kim GIdley. “This is the first time we have won a doubles flight in the first tournament of the year. Hannah and Melissa competed well the entire tournament. It was especially great to see them win the top flight in front of Hannah’s parents and local fans that came out for the finals.”
Sophomore Tiffany Tran and freshman Mary Meyers won a couple of consolation matches in the top doubles flight, including an 8-2 victory over Chelsea Bailey and Brittany Skemp of UW-Milwaukee on Sunday.
In singles, sophomore Tran finished third in the top flight after beating Morven McColloch of Iowa, 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday. Dake and fellow senior Christine Molina won three straight matches in the consolation bracket, while Meyers and junior Anastasia Hueffner did the same in the “B” flight.
“I was especially pleased with the way our players competed in the singles everyday,” said Gidley. “Our team earned a lot of respect and represented the entire tournament well.”
The Falcons return home to host Montana State-Billings (8:30 a.m.) and Texas-Permian Basin (11:30 a.m.) next Sunday, Sept. 23.
