Dr. Margaret Quinones-Perez
The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) is proud to honor Dr. Margaret Quiñones-Perez as its Hermana de la Semana, representing the Executive Leadership Program (ELP) Class of 1996! Dr. Quiñones-Perez has a long history of leadership in education as the first Latina elected to the Santa Monica Community College District Board of Trustees, where she continues to serve as the board’s Vice Chair. Prior to 2000, she served eight years as a trustee on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board, including one year as board president. Dr. Quiñones-Perez was also heavily involved with social services as a Lead Counselor at El Camino College. She is a graduate of Santa Monica College; she received her bachelor’s degree in mental health research methods from California State University at Dominguez Hills; a master’s in counseling psychology from the University of Southern California (USC), and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Quiñones-Perez is a great example of how constant participation in one’s community is always a positive. She has taken her education, which she cultivated in the Santa Monica community, and given back tenfold in her contributions to the higher education system. Dr. Quiñones-Perez says her professional and policy experience is deeply grounded in all student success, student equality, and a committed position in Latino and African-American student access and success. NHLI values those who, like Dr. Quiñones-Perez, take the gifts they are given and reciprocate by giving back to the coming generations. Not only has she given back to her own community, but to the NHLI community as well. She has been and continues to serve as a member of the NHLI Board of Directors. We thank Dr. Quiñones-Perez and congratulate her for exemplifying true Latina leadership!
